HistoryThe business was founded by Fred Sladen ( 1854 - 1925 ) who lived in Yorkshire, England. He emigrated to New Zealand in the 1890's for health reasons and set up business in Christchurch. |

Reg was succeeded by son-in-law Fred Dowie and Irving by son Howard Sladen. |
| Fred Dowie was one of the first New Zealanders to become a gemmologist and distinguished himself by winning the Tully Medal from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1964. | |

Today Sladens is managed by Fred Sladen's great grandchildren, Richard and Anthony Dowie. |
